FH6 Honda NSX Tuning Guide — Hybrid AWD Super Car Setup
The NSX (NC1 / Type S) is a hybrid AWD supercar with mid-engine balance and the most refined chassis in the game. It’s built for road racing and time attack— the platform rewards clean driving, not aggression. The hybrid SH-AWD system counters rotation, so it’s not a drift car. For a 900-class circuit build, focus on suspension balance, semi-slick tires, and the Sport Hybrid tune.
The NSX is the philosophical opposite of every other JDM car in the game. The R34, Supra, and 350Z all reward commitment and aggression. The NSX rewards patience — the chassis is so well-balanced that over-driving it makes you slower, not faster. This guide explains how to set up the NSX for its intended use (road racing) and the small adjustments that make a big difference on the platform.
1. The NSX Philosophy — Refinement Over Force
The NSX is the most refined car in the JDM lineup. The 3.5L twin-turbo V6 + 3 electric motors (Sport Hybrid SH-AWD) deliver 600hp with a torque curve that’s flat from 2,000 rpm to 7,000 rpm. The mid-engine layout puts 42% of the weight over the front axle and 58% over the rear — the most balanced layout in the game, even more balanced than the 911 GT3.
What this means for tuning: the platform is already at its mechanical limits. Most “improvements” you make to the suspension, drivetrain, or weight distribution will make the car worse, not better. The NSX rewards light touch: small adjustments, balance over power, and trust in the chassis.
2. The Road Racing Build (A 800 / S1 900 Class)
The road racing build is the NSX’s only competitive use case. Goal: minimize platform deviation, keep the chassis flat, and let the hybrid AWD system do the traction work.
Engine & Drivetrain — Less Is More
- Intake & exhaust — sport intake + sport exhaust. The NSX engine is already high-output; more air won’t add much power but will smooth the throttle response.
- Transmission — race transmission for closer gear ratios. The stock 9-speed dual-clutch is already excellent; the race transmission is for fine-tuning the gap between gears in circuit work.
- Drivetrain — keep the SH-AWD system. Don’t try to convert to RWD; the hybrid system is the NSX’s defining characteristic. The AWD torque vectoring is the reason the car handles like a mid-engine exotic.
- Differential — limited-slip diff, 50% accel lock / 25% decel lock. The NSX doesn’t need aggressive lock; the AWD system handles most of the traction work.
Suspension — Keep It Balanced
- Springs — race springs, balanced. 165 kgf/mm F / 180 kgf/mm R. Slightly stiffer than stock but well within the chassis’s tolerance.
- Anti-roll bars — balanced. 18 F / 18 R. The NSX chassis doesn’t benefit from asymmetric ARB; the AWD system already manages weight transfer.
- Camber — -2.5° F / -2.0° R. Aggressive but not extreme; matches the chassis’s high cornering speeds.
- Toe — front 0.04° (slight toe-in for stability), rear 0.06° (slight toe-in to keep the rear planted).
- Damping — bump 8.0 F / 8.0 R, rebound 6.5 F / 6.5 R. Even damping for predictable weight transfer.
- Ride height — 12.5 F / 12.5 R cm. The NSX is already low; don’t lower it further.
Tires, Brakes, Aero
- Tires — Semi-Slick, 255 F / 285 R. The NSX doesn’t need full slicks; the chassis is too well-balanced for the extra grip to translate to lap time.
- Tire pressure — 32 PSI front, 32 PSI rear. Even pressure matches the even suspension setup.
- Brakes — race brakes, 55% front / 45% rear bias. The NSX has very strong stock brakes; the upgrade is for consistency under heavy use.
- Aero — small front splitter + small rear wing. The NSX has active aero from the factory; the in-game aero upgrade is for fine-tuning the downforce balance, not for adding big downforce.
- Weight reduction — Stage 1 only. The NSX is already light (3,200 lb); more weight reduction makes the car nervous on high-speed sections.
3. The SH-AWD Hybrid Tuning — Unique to the NSX
The NSX’s hybrid system has three modes that affect how the car behaves:
- Quiet mode — electric-only at low speed, gas engine kicks in around 30 mph. Best for cruising and Car Meet drives. Slowest lap time.
- Sport mode — both motors work together, AWD torque vectoring is most aggressive. Best for circuit work. The fastest lap time mode.
- Track mode — maximum hybrid boost, stiffest suspension setting, most aggressive throttle response. Highest power output, hardest on tires.
For road racing, use Sport mode for most events. The Track mode is overkill for FH6 events and wears the tires faster. The Quiet mode is for cruising and city driving only.
4. The Drift Build — Possible, But Not Recommended
The NSX can be made to drift, but the platform fights it at every step. The hybrid AWD system actively counters rotation, the mid-engine layout resists tail-happiness, and the chassis balance is so good that breaking traction is genuinely difficult.
If you want to drift an NSX anyway (and some players do, for the challenge):
- Set the diff to 30% accel lock / 70% decel lock. This is the opposite of road setup. The high decel lock keeps the rear wheels from separating under braking, which is what triggers the slide.
- Use Sport tires, not Semi-Slick. The less grippy compound makes the slide easier to initiate.
- Add 2-3° more rear camber than road setup. Helps the rear break loose when cornering hard.
- Lower tire pressure 2-3 PSI in the rear. Wider contact patch breaks traction more easily.
- Accept that the NSX will always feel like a car that doesn’t want to drift. It’s not a natural slide platform. The R34 or 350Z will always be better.
5. The Common Tuning Mistakes on the NSX
Three mistakes new players make with the NSX:
- Maxing every upgrade. The NSX doesn’t benefit from full Stage 3 weight reduction, race everything, and max aero. The chassis is already at its limits. Over-tuning makes the car twitchy and less stable in high-speed corners.
- Trying to make it drift. The NSX is a road racing car. Forcing drift setup wastes the platform’s strengths. If you want to drift, use the R34 or 350Z.
- Adding too much power. The NSX engine is already at the top of its output band. The Sport Hybrid tune gives you 600hp; the engine doesn’t respond well to forced induction or aggressive tuning past S1 900. The car gets slower, not faster, if you over-tune the engine.
6. NSX vs. R34 vs. Supra — When to Pick Each
The NSX is the most platform-specific JDM car. Here’s the use case breakdown:
- Pick the NSX for road racing, time attack, and any “driving purity” event. The NSX is the cleanest handling car in the game.
- Pick the R34 for top-speed, drag, cross country, and any event where AWD grip is the deciding factor.
- Pick the Supra for daily driving, drift, touge, and any event where you want one car that does everything reasonably well.
For a single-car garage, the Supra is the practical pick. For a JDM supercar dedicated to road racing, the NSX is the right tool. The R34 is the middle ground.
