FH6 Car Mastery Guide โ Perks Tree, Skill Points & XP
Car Mastery in FH6 is per-car progression: each car has its own XP bar, level, and Perks Tree. Skill Points are spent on perks like Drift Skill, Clean Racing Bonus, Launch Bonus, and Cornering Skill. Best perks vary by car purpose: drift cars want Drift Skill + Drift Chain Extender; drag cars want Launch Bonus + Acceleration; road cars want Clean Racing Bonus + Cornering Skill. Fastest XP sources: Horizon Arcade, Drift Zones, Drag Strips, The Eliminator. Top players earn 100,000+ XP/hour.
Car Mastery is the deepest progression system in Forza Horizon 6. Each car in your garage has its own XP bar, its own level, and its own Perks Tree. As you drive a specific car, it earns XP from racing, drifting, jumping, drafting, and other driving actions. XP unlocks levels; each level grants a Skill Point; Skill Points are spent on perks that provide permanent bonuses to that specific car. This guide covers the Perks Tree, the fastest XP sources, and the best perk-prioritization strategy for each driving discipline.
1. How Car Mastery Works
Every car in your garage starts at Mastery Level 1 with 0 XP. As you drive the car, it accumulates XP from a variety of sources:
- Distance driven โ 50-100 XP per mile, depending on driving style
- Drift chains โ 500-2,000 XP per minute of sustained drifting, scaled by angle and speed
- Clean racing โ 200-500 XP per race finished without hitting other cars or walls
- Speed Traps and Danger Signs โ 1,000-5,000 XP per 3-star completion
- Drafting โ 100-300 XP per minute spent drafting another car
- Jumps โ 200-1,000 XP per jump, scaled by distance and air time
XP requirements scale per level. Levels 1-10 require 1,000-5,000 XP each. Levels 11-20 require 5,000-15,000 XP each. Levels 21-30 require 15,000-50,000 XP each. Max level is 30 (for most cars). At max level, you have ~30 Skill Points to spend on perks.
2. The Perks Tree โ What to Unlock
The Perks Tree has ~40 perks per car, organized into 5 categories: Drift, Race, Launch, Cornering, and Specialty. Each perk costs 1-3 Skill Points and provides a permanent bonus to that car. Top perks by category:
Drift Perks โ For Drift Cars
- Drift Skill (+5%) โ increases drift score by 5% per level. Max 5 levels. This is the single most impactful perk for drift cars.
- Drift Chain Extender โ extends the time before drift chains break. Essential for sustained high-score Drift Zones.
- Clean Drift Bonus (+10%) โ bonus XP for drift chains without wall hits. Best for XP farming.
- E-Brake Initiation Bonus โ increases the angle when initiating with the handbrake. Best for technical Drift Zones with sharp entries.
Race Perks โ For Road Racing
- Clean Racing Bonus (+10%) โ bonus XP for finishing races without hitting other cars or walls. Best for XP farming in road races.
- Drafting Bonus (+5%) โ increases draft speed boost by 5% per level. Max 5 levels. Essential for high-speed circuits.
- Cornering Skill (+3%) โ increases cornering grip by 3% per level. Max 5 levels. Most impactful road racing perk.
- Braking Skill (+3%) โ increases braking force by 3% per level. Max 5 levels. Best for technical circuits with heavy braking zones.
Launch Perks โ For Drag Racing

- Acceleration (+5%) โ increases acceleration by 5% per level. Max 5 levels. Synergizes with Launch Bonus.
Cornering Perks โ For All Disciplines

- Stability Control (+2%) โ reduces snap oversteer and improves mid-corner stability. Best for high-power cars.

Specialty Perks โ For Specific Disciplines

- Wheelspin Reward Boost โ increases the credit reward from Wheelspin bonuses. Best for daily driver cars.
3. Best Perk Strategy by Car Purpose
The optimal perk strategy depends on the carโs purpose. With ~30 Skill Points to spend, you can fully specialize one category or moderately invest in two. Recommendations:
Drift Car โ Specialize Drift
- Drift Skill (max 5 levels, 5 points)
- Drift Chain Extender (1 point)
- Clean Drift Bonus (3 levels, 3 points)
- E-Brake Initiation Bonus (2 levels, 2 points)
- Stability Control (5 levels, 5 points) โ prevents snap oversteer
- Cornering Skill (5 levels, 5 points)
- Clean Racing Bonus (5 levels, 5 points)
- Total: ~26 points
Drag Car โ Specialize Launch
- Launch Bonus (max 3 levels, 3 points)
- Perfect Launch Bonus (3 levels, 3 points)
- Acceleration (max 5 levels, 5 points)
- Speed Trap Bonus (3 levels, 3 points)
- Cornering Skill (5 levels, 5 points) โ for the corner after the strip

- Total: ~28 points
4. Fastest XP Sources โ Ranked
Not all XP sources are equal. Ranked by XP per hour for skilled players:
1. The Eliminator (Multiplayer Battle Royale)
The Eliminator gives 10,000-30,000 XP per match depending on placement. Matches last 5-15 minutes, so the effective rate is 80,000-120,000 XP per hour. This is the single best XP source if youโre skilled at The Eliminator. The downside is variance โ early eliminations give much less XP than final placements.
2. Horizon Arcade Events
Horizon Arcade events give 5,000-15,000 XP per event (3-5 minutes). Running events back-to-back yields 60,000-100,000 XP per hour. The events are randomized, so some are faster XP than others. Skill Chain events (drift + speed + clean racing) are the most XP-dense.
3. Sustained Drift Zones (Drift Car Required)
High-angle sustained drift on a Drift Zone gives 1,000-3,000 XP per minute. Skilled drifters can chain Drift Zones for 60-90 minutes of continuous XP, yielding 60,000-150,000 XP per hour. The Akina Pass hidden location and the Kyoto mountain Drift Zones are the best XP-per-hour Drift Zones.
4. Drag Strip with Perfect Launches
A perfect launch drag run gives 2,000-5,000 XP per 15-second run. Back-to-back drag runs yield 40,000-60,000 XP per hour. Less efficient than Horizon Arcade or Drift Zones, but consistent and predictable.
5. Speed Traps and Danger Signs (Touring)
Touring the map and 3-starring PR Stunts gives 1,000-5,000 XP per stunt. With ~200 stunts and 5-10 hours to complete them all, the effective rate is 20,000-50,000 XP per hour. Less efficient than focused XP farming but more enjoyable for many players.
5. Common Car Mastery Mistakes
- Spreading XP across too many cars. Mastery is per-car. Driving 10 cars at level 10 gives you 10 mediocre builds; driving 1 car to level 30 gives you a fully-perked specialist. Focus on 3-5 favorite cars, not all 50+.
- Unlocking perks in the wrong order. Unlocking Drift Skill early on a drift car compounds the bonus over more levels. Unlocking a Specialty perk early wastes points on a perk you wonโt max.
- Ignoring Clean Racing Bonus. Clean Racing Bonus is the most universal XP-farming perk. Unlocking it early on every car compounds the XP gain across all future drives.
- Not using the XP multiplier events. FH6 runs weekend XP multiplier events (2x or 3x XP). Save your XP farming for these weekends to double or triple your effective rate.
- Selling cars with progress. Selling a car deletes all its Mastery progress. Even if you donโt drive the car anymore, the perks stay locked in. Only sell cars youโre sure youโll never drive again.
